STANWOOD — Floodwaters turned lowlands into lakes and prompted road closures throughout Western Washington Saturday, but no injuries or major damage was reported.
In Snohomish County, Stanwood resident Tammy Butler was waiting for waters to recede so she could reach her brother’s house, which was isolated by flooding.
"I have known people who have lived here all their lives and never seen it this bad," she told KING-TV.
Hundreds of acres of farmland were under water in the area, and some sign posts were two-thirds under water.
The Red Cross handed out emergency cleanup kits to residents, including buckets of bleach and tools to help shovel away mud once the water recedes. However, in most cases when water rose to reach homes and farmhouses, it didn’t seep in and cause significant damage.
The messy weather came a day after an avalanche swept a car off U.S. 2 and 30 feet down an embankment about 13 miles east of Skykomish on Friday, briefly trapping four people in the vehicle. The two men and two women in the car were rescued a short time later by the Stevens Pass ski patrol. No one was seriously hurt.
