TACOMA — A man charged with fatally stabbing a Spanaway, Washington, woman while she babysat two young relatives more than two decades ago has been extradited from Florida.
The News Tribune reports that a not guilty plea was entered on behalf of 60-year-old James Edward Mitchell when he appeared in court Wednesday. Pierce County prosecutors have charged him with first-degree murder in the Feb. 6, 1993, death of 36-year-old Linda Robinson.
Mitchell once lived across the street from Robinson but investigators don’t believe the two were acquainted.
DNA linked Mitchell to the slaying last October. Blood from Robinson and Mitchell was found on her jeans and a cut telephone cord.
U.S. marshals arrested Mitchell earlier this month in Leesburg, Florida. Bail has been set at $2 million.
Robinson suffered 10 stab wounds to the back and several cuts to her neck and chest. A telephone was close to Robinson but the cord had been cut.
