A flying saucer sculpture at Snohomish County’s Paine Field Community Park has received recognition as one of the best public art projects in the U.S. or Canada.
“Landing Zone” by artist Peter Reiquam makes a humorous reference to nearby Paine Field Airport. Its features are both practical and artistic: Natural boulders are seats that suggest an alien landscape, and a cast concrete “X” is a bench that marks an imaginary landing zone.
Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit organization, chose the installation as one of the 40 best pieces of public art for 2010. The sculpture beat out more than 300 entries.
The 16-foot-wide spaceship sculpture was funded through the county’s One Percent for the Arts program. The program contributes 1 percent of all county construction projects of more than $100,000, excluding roads, to the county arts fund.
The park is at 11928 Beverly Park Road.
