SEATTLE — A former investigator of the sunken Arctic Rose fishing vessel says the ship went down because of damage to the hull.
The Arctic Rose sank suddenly in the Bering Sea April 2001, killing all 15 men on board in one of the worst fishing disaster off Alaska in decades.
The Seattle Times reported that former National Transportation Safety Board investigator Bob Ford said footage from a remote-operated camera taken in 2001 shows a dark splotch which he says is a breach in the hull.
But Ford said the video shows one of several gashes in the vessel caused by fishing equipment that broke. His analysis was in a 2005 draft report but was later removed.
Coast Guard officers who investigated the sinking say the area is peeled paint.
