TACOMA — The former police chief of the small town of Montesano had a busy day in court, but it had nothing to do with keeping the law.
The Tacoma News Tribune reports 51-year-old Ray Sowers had to attend a drug court hearing because of January theft charges, where he was accused of stealing more than $1,500 in liquor from a grocery store.
The former chief was also there to face new criminal charges. He also to plead not guilty to accusations that he’s been trying to sell methamphetamine and heroin.
Charging documents say Pierce County sheriff’s deputies searched the Sowers’ apartment Tuesday as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation. They found 158 grams of suspected meth, 38.2 grams of heroin, a loaded 9mm handgun, crib notes and a digital gram scale.
Sowers ended a 26-year career in law enforcement in 2010 after pleading guilty to using the department’s credit card to spend $17,000.
The public defender for Sowers, Joseph Evans, declined to comment on his behalf Thursday.
