SILVERDALE, Wash. — Former Seattle Seahawks placekicker Norm Johnson is a hero to his 11-year-old son after helping to rescue a woman from an overturned car.
Johnson, a real estate agent, was taking his son to school Monday morning when he stopped to a woman from her car, a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am that had skidded on black ice and landed upside down at a 45-degree angle in a water-filled ditch, a Kitsap County sheriff’s deputy confirmed.
Johnson, 47, who was with the Seahawks in 1982-1990 and later played for Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, told the Kitsap Sun of Bremerton a woman was outside the car dialing 911 while the driver had crawled into the back of the car to get away from the frigid water but couldn’t get out and was screaming.
He used a large rock to break the glass.
“She climbed out, I gave her a hug and she was just really scared,” he said. “She likely was in shock.”
Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Wilson said the woman escaped injury.
Johnson said his son Jameson didn’t mind arriving at school after the bell.
“He had a pretty big smile on his face,” Johnson said. “He thought his dad was a hero and said ‘wait until Mrs. Pitcher (his teacher) hears why I am late.”’
