SEATTLE — The former chief of the Swinomish Police Department has been indicted on charges of embezzling more than $30,000 from the tribe.
The indictment says Thomas Schlicker took the funds between 2008 and 2014. Federal officials say he set up a secret bank account in the police department’s name and deposited checks made out to the department and withdrew cash.
The indictment says Shlicker also used the tribe’s Chevron/Texaco credit care to buy gas for his personal vehicles and for his family.
Swinomish Chairman Brian Cladoosby says the tribe feels betrayed but also is thankful for the loyal tribal staff who spotted the problems and reported them.
A bench warrant was issued for his arrest on Thursday. It was not immediately clear from court records if he has a lawyer.
