Fort Lewis helicopters to be shipped to Iraq

ABERDEEN – More than 20 military helicopters from Fort Lewis have landed in Aberdeen in preparation for shipment to Iraq.

The choppers are part of the 4th Squadron, 6th U.S. Cavalry, which is being deployed to Iraq, Fort Lewis officials told The Daily World newspaper.

Authorities did not release details about how long military equipment would be stored at the Port of Grays Harbor, or when a ship to carry it would arrive.

At least 24 military helicopters in groups of eight landed at the port on Tuesday.

Law enforcement agencies in the area said they are providing additional security for the port, including preparations for possible anti-war demonstrators.

Similar military shipments out of the ports of Tacoma and Olympia in the past year have drawn protesters and resulted in some arrests.

Outlook: Man’s death may be gang related

A 20-year-old Sunnyside man was shot to death in what Yakima County sheriff’s detectives are calling a gang-related confrontation.

George P. Salinas died from a single gunshot 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in only the second homicide reported in Yakima County this year, Chief of Detectives Stew Graham said.

Three people have been taken into police custody, including the suspected shooter, who was arrested Wednesday morning, he said.

Initial reports about the shooting said the people in the shooter’s car challenged the occupants of Salinas’ car about their gang affiliation, Graham said. One shot was fired.

Graham said he did not know if the victim was affiliated with a gang.

Oregon: Missing girl’s jacket found on eBay

A Hillsboro mother found her daughter’s missing winter coat on eBay, and now a teacher at the girl’s elementary school faces charges of theft and computer crimes.

Elizabeth Logan, 41, is on paid administrative leave from Jackson Elementary. She denies stealing the coat, saying she got it from a lost and found bin, Cmdr. Chris Skinner said.

The mother searched the school’s lost and found bin for the coat, then decided to turn to eBay for a replacement. After finding a seemingly identical coat, she noticed that the seller was from Hillsboro.

The mother alerted another bidder that the coat might be stolen, and the other bidder relayed the information to the seller, Logan. Skinner said Logan asked the other bidder to outbid the girl’s mother.

Logan’s salary is nearly $69,000 a year, and she has taught 20 years at two elementary schools. She is to appear in court Friday.
