MUKILTEO — Four students were suspended from Kamiak High School last week after a fight on campus.
The fight broke out after lunch on Dec. 8, when a boy allegedly punched another boy over the attentions of a girl, said Andy Muntz, a spokesman for the Mukilteo School District. Two other boys allegedly joined in, one fighting for each side.
The boy who received the first punch suffered a black eye — the most serious injury, Muntz said.
School administrators suspended all four boys. The student who allegedly started the fight received a considerably longer suspension than the other students. Two girls received brief in-school suspensions for their role in the fight. Though they didn’t physically join in, they egged on their classmates, Muntz said.
The fight was somewhat divided along racial lines, with Hispanic kids facing off against non-Hispanic kids, but Muntz said the fight appeared to be over a girl, not racial issues.
One of the students involved may have gang ties, but the district’s school resource officer doesn’t believe the other students are involved in gangs, Muntz said. The fight didn’t appear to be gang-related, he said.
School officials called Mukilteo police to report the fight on the following day. Police are investigating and haven’t arrested anyone, said Cmdr. Chuck Macklin.
