OLYMPIA — The first razor clam season in about a year and a half is set to open Friday on four of Washington state’s ocean beaches.
Dan Ayers, a state coastal shellfish biologist, said digging prospects should be excellent despite a significant decline in the clam population.
Clamming is open from noon to midnight today through Sunday on the Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis and Kalaloch beaches. The limit is the first 15 clams dug regardless of size or condition.
The last razor clam season in the state was in May 2002. High levels of domoic acid, a naturally occurring toxin, resulted in closure of all of the state’s ocean beaches to clamming last fall and spring. Domoic acid is not believed to affect the health of clams.
