From Herfy’s to TV
Everett native Michael Lucas began his restaurant career working at Herfy’s. The popular hamburger spot on Evergreen Way, no longer there, was owned by his mother, Anna Lucas. His mom has good reason to be proud of her son’s culinary achievements. One of two restaurants he owns in Seattle will be featured Monday on the Food Network.
A 1982 Everett High School graduate, Lucas owns the Pig Iron and Slim’s Last Chance, both on First Avenue S. not far from Safeco Field.
Slim’s Last Chance, which has a simple menu of four chili choices, burgers, crawfish po’boy sandwiches, and jalapeno macaroni and cheese, will be featured at 10 tonight on the Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Lucas said the show’s exuberant host, Guy Fieri, spent several days at his eatery.
Slim’s Last Chance also grabbed the attention of foodies in January, when Bon Appetit magazine decided it was No. 4 on its list of the country’s top 10 places to get a great bowl of chili.
Share memories Tuesday: The Department of Labor and Industries honors the memories of 81 workers who died as a result of job-related injuries or illnesses in Washington in 2008.
A Worker Memorial Day ceremony is 2 p.m. Tuesday at 7273 Linderson Way SW in Tumwater.
The ceremony includes a reading of names of the workers, accompanied by bell ringers from the Tumwater Fire Department.
Following the ceremony, families will be invited to participate in ringing a bronze memorial bell sculpture at the L&I building.
