Crabbing opens — don’t lose your pots
Volunteers with the Snohomish County Marine Resources Committee will be at local boat launches on opening weekend of crabbing Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers will provide educational materials, gauges for measuring crabs, and will be available to discuss how to correctly set crab pots so fisherman can catch more crab.
The nonprofit Northwest Straits Initiative has a checklist for crabbers to avoid lost crab pots. An estimated 12,000 pots are lost in Puget Sound each year, trapping 180,000 Dungeness crab that are never harvested.
