Gold Dust Days starts Friday
The Gold Dust Days Heritage festival runs Friday to Sunday . The festival pays tribute to the western heritage of Gold Bar. Experience real gold panning, a Civil War encampment, live music, handcrafted-only street fair, a car show with a classic pin-up girl contest, parade and motorcycle poker run.
There also will be old-fashioned free fun for children, including a bike decorating session followed by a bike parade, a bouncy house, gunny sack races against the firefighters and a theatrical performance by the Red Hat Ladies.

Street Scramble returns
Street Scramble, a kind of community scavenger hunt, returns to Everett on Sunday. The orienteering event starts promptly at 10 a.m. from the Everett Family YMCA, 2720 Rockefeller Ave.
Dozens of checkpoints are marked on a map. The goal is to find as many as possible within a time limit, working alone or with a team. Registration costs $5 to $26, based on age, and goes up after Friday.

Watch horses
The nonprofit Washington State Paint Horse Club holds its Star Spangled Classic, Friday to Sunday at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe. The event is free to watch.

Horse group plans reunion
The Pegasus Patrol drill team reunites at a potluck picnic, 11 a.m. Saturday at Lynnwood’s Heritage Park, 19921 Poplar Way. The group started in 1946 to train young people in horsemanship. It later became affiliated with the Alderwood Manor Youth Club, and later a 4-H chapter, and remained active through the 1960s.
No horses at the potluck, but bring photos and stories to share.

JUST FOR YOUTH
Write a mystery
Youth ages 10 to 18 can sign up for “Undercover Writing: Flashlight Required,” a mystery writing workshop, set for 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday. The workshop is free, but space is limited and registration is required. Kathryn Dennis of SpyGirls Press will help participants create five mystery plots, including red herrings and clues to keep readers guessing.

Create crazy contraptions
Use simple objects, like marbles and paper clips, to create chain-reaction machines in the spirit of inventor Rube Goldberg:
– 2 p.m. July 25 at the Arlington Library, 135 N Washington Ave. (school-age kids)
– 11 a.m. Aug. 10 at the Stanwood Library, 9701 271st St. NW (school-age kids)
– 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Monroe Library, 1070 Village Way (ages 11-16)
