Online civics class starts Tuesday
“Lynnwood University,” a free eight-week course offered to Lynnwood residents, is offered online starting Tuesday. The goal is to increase awareness of how local city government works and help residents better access city programs and services.
Each week, participants will get an email with a link to an online video that includes lectures, demonstrations and tours. Registration is required.

Concert to aid suicide prevention
A concert to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is set for 8 p.m. Tuesday at Tony V’s Garage, 1716 Hewitt Ave., Everett. The event features DJ Samwich, Alex Payne and Jacob Fullerton. Hosted by David Calloway, the event also includes poetry and comedy by Lil Ben.
Admission is $5. All cover charges and tips at the bar will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Make blankets for kids
The Binky Patrol, a group of quilters, knitters and crocheters who make “binkies” for children in traumatic situations, seeks volunteers and donations of fabric, yarn or thread. The group meets next on Sept. 10 because of the Labor Day holiday (normally first Sunday, second Sunday if a holiday) in Marysville.

Project Linus also makes quilts and blankets to donate to Snohomish County children who have experienced traumatic life events. The next Project Linus event is set for 12:30-2:30 p.m. Sept. 12 (second Tuesday) at the Carl Gipson Senior Center of Everett, 3025 Lombard Ave. Materials and equipment are provided. Bring a sewing machine if you have one.

MEETING
Retired public employees
The Retired Public Employees Council of Washington Chapter 6 (Everett area) meets next at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (first Tuesdays, September to June) at the Carl Gipson Senior Center of Everett, 3025 Lombard Ave. The speaker will be Pat Thompson, of the Washington State Council of County and City Employees.
Meetings are open to all, but membership is limited to retirees in the state retirement system.

Weight-loss groups
Several local chapters of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), a nonprofit weight-loss club, meet at different days and times across Snohomish County. Meetings include a private weigh-in, peer support, information and awards for progress. First meeting is free.
