New playground in Monroe opening

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new playground at Skykomish River Park will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The park is at 413 Sky River Parkway in Monroe.

The updated play equipment opened last week. Some finishing touches remain. A new drinking fountain is on back order, as well as a toddler swing.

EvCC students present projects

Beth Ha created ceramic prayer wheels. Participants can insert personal prayers into the containers and then gently rotate them.

Viliame Vuetibau addressed a problem in his home country of Fiji by designing a diesel converter to turn an abundant commodity (coconut oil) into a fuel source (biodiesel) to create affordable electricity.

They are just two of the eight Everett Community College honors program graduates who will be presenting their final projects at a public forum, 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The event is in Room 101 of the Henry M. Jackson Conference Center.

Arts Week at Lynnwood High

Student photography, drawings, paintings, pottery, glass art and more will be on display during an Arts Week reception, 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lynnwood High School, 18218 North Road, Bothell. There will be refreshments, crafts and awards. The public is invited.

Exchange your worn U.S. flag for a new one June 4-8 at McClain Insurance, 10410 19th Ave. SE, Suite 100, Everett. The company’s annual event celebrates Flag Day. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Old flags will be retired by local Boy Scouts. New flags are made in the United States.

Share your Vietnam War stories

The Monroe Historical Society seeks current or former Monroe residents who served in the Vietnam War or lived in the city during the war. The society is looking to record oral interviews, as well as preserve or view letters, photos, newspaper clippings and other documents related to the topic.

While veterans are a focus of the project, organizers also are interested in hearing from Vietnam War protesters and supporters and those who knew others who went overseas.

Arts Commission seat

Lake Stevens has two volunteer openings on the Arts Commission. Those who live within the city limits or the Lake Stevens urban growth boundary are eligible. The commission puts on annual events such as Music By the Lake and Theater in the Park.

Applications are available through the city’s website, www.lakestevenswa.gov, or at City Hall, 1812 Main St. Deadline to apply is June 8.
