Orca Month is here

June is Orca Month in Washington, and a variety of local events are planned.

Everett: “Our Toxic Orcas” is presented 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA), 1205 Craftsman Way. The event looks at the threat of pollution on Southern Resident orcas. Jetty Island: A beach clean-up at Everett’s Jetty Island is 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Fisherman’s Tribute Plaza, 1205 Craftsman Way, Everett. Bring gloves. More info: portofeverett.com, 425-259-6001.

Stanwood: A “Sound the Alarm for Southern Resident Orcas” presentation is at 11 a.m. June 16 at the Stanwood Library, 9701 271st St. NW. More info: 360-629-3132.

Expo celebrates education innovation

Everett Public Schools will host its annual Innovation Expo from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Angel of the Winds Arena. Booths from every school will showcase what students are learning, and interactive booths will highlight science, technology, engineering and math. Admission is free.

Help break in new playground

Edmonds will celebrate a grand opening of a new playground at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St. The $150,000 structure includes a spinner with a back brace to accommodate children with disabilities, a play zone for younger children, and a larger footprint than the old playground area.

The local American Cancer Society seeks volunteers to drive cancer patients to their medical appointments. Volunteer posts offer flexible hours.

Become a Waste Warrior

Like to see waste get put in the correct bins? Volunteer as a Waste Warrior. A training session will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, June 23 to July 7, at the Washington State University Snohomish County Extension campus, at McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett. Learn about recycling, composting and other topics, get hands-on training, and take local field trips. Then share what you know at local events. Deadline to apply is June 18. A $35 fee is charged for the cost of materials.
