HEADS UP

Label your paddlecraft and other vessels

The U.S. Coast Guard asks owners of kayaks, canoes and other paddlecraft to label their vessels with contact information after it responded to an average of one unmanned-adrift paddlecraft in the region every day in July.

In six of 10 instances, the owner of an adrift vessel was never found and, with no signs of distress, the search was given up.

Paddlecraft owners should label their vessel using a permanent or waterproof marker covered with clear waterproof tape for increased durability, or check with their local outdoor recreation retailer or Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla to obtain a “Paddle Smart” identification sticker.

At minimum, include the owner name, phone number and secondary contact.
