I-1098 debate
The father of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates Jr. and a former U.S. senator are scheduled to debate Initiative 1098 at Edmonds Community College tonight.
Attorney Bill Gates Sr. is scheduled to speak in support of the initiative and former U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton, R-Wash., against it.
The event is at 7 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre, Mukilteo Hall, 20310 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.
Joining the panel are Paul Guppy of the Washington Policy Center and Marilyn Watkins of the Economic Opportunity Institute, both based in Seattle. Edmonds City Councilman D.J. Wilson is moderating. It’s part of the “Civic Engagement” series that airs on local cable channels.
Initiative 1098 would tax individuals who earn more than $200,000 per year and couples who earn more than $400,000 per year.
It would lower the state’s share of the property tax by 20 percent and eliminate the business-and-occupation tax for small businesses.
