Self-driving cars: Our future?
The University of Washington’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers a free presentation, “Self‐Drive Cars: The Future of Transportation,” at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Mill Creek Senior Center, 4111 133rd Street SE. Mark Hallenbeck, director of the Washington State Transportation Center, will describe recent innovations in car technology, and what the future of transportation may hold.

Talk about a comeback
Cynthia Chang, an assistant professor at University of Washington Bothell, will give the next Pub Night Talk, “Blast from the Past: Ecological Resilience on Mount St. Helens,” 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Hayne’ s Hall at McMenamins Anderson School restaurant, 18607 Bothell Way NE, Bothell.
Since the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, plants have recolonized, survived and adapted to the once-barren blast zone. Chang, a plant ecologist, explains how this natural experiment provides valuable lessons in the era of global change.
Free. All ages. Seating is first come, first served and doors open at 6 p.m. Talk followed by Q-and-A.

Elections office open house
Snohomish County Elections will hold an open house, 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday in its offices in the Administration West Building on the campus at 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett, and at its election processing center at the Jackson House, 1818 Pacific Ave., Everett. See the ClearVote counting system and how returned ballots are handled.

Learn medieval martial arts
Adults and kids age 12 and older are invited to a Medieval Martial Arts workshop, 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Stanwood Library, 9701 271st St. NW. Eric Slyter from the Knights of Veritas leads students through basic techniques. Registration is required.

Arts and crafts time for adults
The next arts and crafts time for adults at the Evergreen Branch Library is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 1. Create some mixed-media, Kandinsky-inspired landscapes feature simplified shapes and rich colors. Supplies provided. Ages 12 and older can come with a participating adult. The library is at 9512 Evergreen Way, Everett. Space is limited and registration is required.
