Spotting fake health news

Attend a free lecture by the University of Washington’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 8 at Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., Mukilteo.

The speaker is Sally James, health journalist and science writer, who has published thousands of articles on cancer, diabetes, heart disease, low back pain and other topics. Learn tools for spying exaggeration, skewering hype and burning down bragging in ads and traditional news sources.

Forum on the brain

“Repairing the Failing Brain,” a free public forum on the potential for new treatments for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases, will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Jan. 9 at UW Medicine South Lake Union in Seattle.

The forum, featuring leading experts in stem cell science, neurology, dementia and genetic medicine, will cover recent discoveries and research. It is being presented by the UW Medicine Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine in the Orin Smith Auditorium, UW Medicine South Lake Union Building C, 850 Republican St. Seattle.

Teens: Oral history competition

Students in grades 9-12 are invited to enter a statewide oral history competition to complement a new exhibit, “1968: The Year that Rocked Washington,” by Legacy Washington, a program of the Office of the Secretary of State. The competition runs until April 30.

Entries are to consist of a four-page to 10-page written profile or essay, based on interviews and research, telling the story of a person who experienced the tumult of 1968. Winning works will be published online.

Community service credit for students

The Mukilteo Library invites students in grades 6 to 12 to earn community service credit by putting crafts together for library programs, sorting books and more. Those interested can meet in the library’s teen area at 10:30 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month, between September and May. The first session of the year is Jan. 5. The library is at 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd.

Finding your roots

Sno-Isle Genealogical Society offers a free beginning genealogy class at 10 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month at the Research Library in Heritage Park, 19827 Poplar Way, Lynnwood. How to get started with your research, plus tips on getting organized, will help the researcher find their ancestors. The class lasts about an hour.
