Smelter cleanup continues in Everett. The state’s Department of Ecology began work at Wiggums Hollow Park this month. In April, the agency plans to start removing soil at the Viola Oursler Overlook. Both parks are expected to be fully open by the end of July.

The Monroe Historical Society will present a free history program, “Monroe’s Vanished Landmarks,’ 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Monroe Library. The library is at 1070 Village Way, Monroe.

Prep for emergencies

The city of Mill Creek will host a workshop on how to develop family and neighborhood emergency plans from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 21 at Mill Creek City Hall South, Council Chambers, 15728 Main St. Other workshops are scheduled for Aug. 20 and Nov. 27.

Help Habitat

Habitat for Humanity of Snohomish County has opportunities to apply for the board of directors and for spots on volunteer committees. Those committees include resource development, faith relations, veterans efforts, construction, family services and real estate.

Getting creative in Snohomish

The Creative Writing group at the Snohomish Senior Center is welcoming new participants. The group meets once a month from 2-4 p.m. on the third Monday of the month. Essays, memoirs, reminiscences, poetry, haiku. Listeners are always welcome and appreciated, too.

Mill Creek offers police academy

The Mill Creek Police Department plans to host its third annual Police Citizens Academy starting Thursday. Spots are still available.

The 10-week program is designed to help people from Mill Creek and surrounding communities learn more about policing and how to assist law enforcement. Each week will focus on a different topic, such as SWAT, K9, patrol procedures and criminal investigations. Officers will share insights into their work.

Classes will be held Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the City Hall North, 15720 Main St.

The program is free. Applicants must be at least 18 and must pass a basic background check.

Class size is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Board seeks help in supe search

The Granite Falls School Board has scheduled a special session for 6 p.m. Thursday to finish up work that will be used to hire a new superintendent. The goal is to complete a superintendent profile and job description for a promotional flier and online application form. The meeting will be at the administration office, 205 N. Alder Avenue. The public is welcome.
