Help the Grange
The Tualco Grange Hall is hosting a pancake breakfast and yard sale this Saturday. Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at 18933 Tualco Road in Monroe. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children younger than 10. The menu includes pancakes, ham, scrambled eggs, juice and coffee or tea.
A weather-dependant yard sale is also planned between 8 a.m. and noon. Vendor spots are available for $15. For more information, call Leslie Wells at 360-306-0905 or Dana Wells at 360-348-6575. Proceeds will be used to pay for repairs to the hall.
Death Race finisher: For Spartan Death Race competitor Josh Clifford, the second time was the charm. The 26-year-old Air Force captain and 2004 Marysville Pilchuck High School graduate tried the extreme endurance test in 2011, but quit after 25 grueling hours.
Clifford, featured in Julie Muhlstein’s column June 8, said he finished this month’s event about 63 hours after starting. Sponsors of the race, which began June 15 in Pittsfield, Vt., said that of 344 registered racers, just 51 were official finishers — including five women.
Clifford said the hardest task was carrying a log up and down a mountain, and at the mountaintop folding an origami crane. For all that sweat, Clifford won a faux skull.
