Front Porch: Concert benefits Edmonds jazz ensemble trip

Jazz ensemble benefit

Edmonds-Woodway High School’s Jazz Ensemble I will hold a concert fundraiser, 7 p.m. March 27 at the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

The “When You’re Smilin’” concert will help the band with travel expenses for the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival, to be held in May at the Lincoln Center in New York City. The ensemble was one of 15 finalist bands invited to the prestigious event. Tickets for the concert fundraiser are $22, $12 for students and children. For more information, go to edmondscenterforthearts.org.

Edmonds schools to talk budget: The Edmonds School District will hold public meetings to discuss the 2013-14 budget.

The first meeting is set for 4 p.m. March 27 at Meadowdale High School, 6002 168th St. SW, Lynnwood.

Other meetings are set for 7 p.m. April 10 at Lynnwood High School, 18218 North Road, unincorporated Bothell; 4 p.m. April 17 at Mountlake Terrace High School, 21801 44th Ave. W.; and 7 p.m. April 24 at Edmonds-Woodway High School, 7600 212th St. SW.

Research your family tree: The census-taker may have missed your ancestor, but the tax man didn’t. “Tax Lists, an Under-Utilized Resource” is the topic to be presented by Sarah Fleming at the April 3 monthly meeting of Sno-Isle Genealogical Society at 19903 Poplar Way, Heritage Park, Lynnwood. Meeting and refreshments start at 6:30 p.m. with the formal program at 6:45 p.m.

A lot can be learned from tax records starting with the Civil War. Fleming has been a genealogist for about 40 years and has taken numerous courses on this subject. Guests are welcome. For more information, call 425-775-6267.
