First whale sighting
Gray whales, common visitors in the spring, made their first local appearance of the season.
Sharon Johnson saw the first spout Monday from her home at Potlatch Beach on the Tulalip Reservation.
A lone whale seemed to be feeding in the shallow water south of Priest Point. The neighbors joined her in watching it.
College financial aid help: This Thursday, the YMCA of Snohomish County, with the support of the Monroe Family YMCA and Everett Community College, will cosponsor a College Goal Sunday event at the Everett Community College-East Campus facility from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lake Tye Building, 14090 Fryelands Boulevard S.E., Room 302, Monroe.

College Goal Sunday is a series of national events designed to support anyone who is considering post-secondary education in the year ahead by providing the tools and resources needed to complete a federal student aid application.
For the Monroe event, EVCC will have professional financial assistance staff on hand to help individuals and families complete their FAFSA on the computers in the college tech lab.
There are many other FAFSA/College Goal Sunday events in Washington, including one at the EVCC Main Campus on Saturday, January 26.
