Front Porch: Fundraiser for Everett boy with epilepsy

A fundraiser to help pay for a service dog to alert 10-year old Nate Sample of Everett to impending seizures is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Gold Creek Community Church, 4326 148th St. SE in Mill Creek. Nate’s story was featured in The Herald on Feb. 4. The event has a Star Wars theme and people are invited to dress as their favorite Star Wars character. There will be games, food, bouncy houses.

Rocks 101: Edmonds Parks and Recreation is offering two classes in March for kids ages 6-12 who love rocks and geology. “Rockhound Discovery” is a one-hour class, taught by Amy Bergin, on March 2 from 10 to 11 a.m. Cost is $12 for Edmonds residents, $14 for non-residents. “Puget Sound Rocks” is a five-hour mini-camp March 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a non-school day for Edmonds School District. Cost is $32 for Edmonds residents, $37 for non-residents. To register for either class call 425-771-0230, or go to www.reczone.org online.

Stewardship training: Snohomish Conservation District and the National Wildlife Federation are offering habitat steward training in Stanwood this spring. The program’s goal is to train volunteers to mentor children, work with schools and local groups, and restore, maintain and create wildlife habitat.

Class participants will learn the basics of providing food, water, cover and habitat for wildlife. Local experts will teach about native plants, streams and wetlands, adding perch poles and more.

Classes will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. April 10, 17, 24, and May 1 at the Stanwood PUD, 9124 271st St. NW. Field trips are set for April 20 and 27.
