Girl Scouts host vigil
The Girl Scouts of Western Washington North Regional Office plans to host a candlelight vigil Jan. 4 in remembrance of the victims and those affected by the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.
The public vigil is set for 6:30 p.m. at Quil Ceda Stadium on the Marysville Pilchuck High campus, 5611 108th St. NE, in Marysville.
The North Regional Girl Scout Office has a poster in the lobby for the sharing of personal sentiments. This poster will be forwarded to the Girl Scouts of Connecticut.

New year, new dig law: Beginning Jan. 1, utilities, excavators, and the public will see more rigorous enforcement of the state’s “call-before-you-dig” law, including higher penalties, mandatory damage-reporting and clearer procedures.
The new law affects homeowners and anyone else doing any excavating. Among other changes under the new law, excavators and utilities must report to the UTC any damage to underground facilities within 45 days. Previously, only damage to regulated natural gas and hazardous liquid facilities had to be reported.
The law did not change the current requirement that everyone digging more than 12 inches in a residential yard or garden call to locate underground utility lines before starting the work. Call 811 for the free location service a few days before you begin work.
More information about Washington’s dig law can be found on the UTC’s website, www.utc.wa.gov/diglaw.
