Name a ferry
Here’s your chance to name one of Washington’s iconic ferry boats.
The state is having two new Olympic class 144-car ferries built and the Washington State Transportation Commission invites people statewide to submit ideas for names.
Many of the 23 ferries in the state’s fleet have names already reflecting the state’s tribal heritage, including the three most recently named in the Kwa-di Tabil Class — Chetzemoka, Salish and Kennewick.
The commission will look for names the carry statewide significance and represent the state’s image and culture. Names should be broadly familiar and inoffensive and avoid commercial overtones or commemorating individuals.
Proposals must provide background information on the proposed name and show support either with local media stories, petitions or letters of support local and state officials.
Submissions must be received by the state at the close of business Sept. 26. Proposals may be mailed or emailed to: Washington State Transportation Commission; P.O. Box 47308 Olympia, WA 98504-7308 Email: transc@wsdot.wa.gov. More info: http://www.wstc.wa.gov/Naming/default.htm.
