Ice Caves closed
The two parking lots at the Big Four Ice Caves will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday for emergency training. The trail also will be closed.
The ice caves are on the Mountain Loop Highway, east of Granite Falls.
A number of agencies will be practicing how to coordinate an emergency response in a remote area. They will work on ways to communicate with limited radio coverage and no cell service. They also will practice helicopter rescues and other skills.
Meet the deputies: The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office plans three open houses in May with demonstrations, police dogs, station tours and family-friendly activities.
They are set for 4 to 7 p.m. May 14 at the east precinct, 515 Main St., Sultan; 4 to 7 p.m. May 15 at the north precinct, 15100 40th Ave. NE, Marysville; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 16 at the south precinct, 15928 Mill Creek Blvd.
Each event will include free car seat inspections and information on Neighborhood Watch, crime prevention and public safety.

Learn about becoming a foster parent: The Family Support Center of South Snohomish County plans an open house May 21 for those considering becoming foster parents.
The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the center, 6330 195th St. SW, Lynnwood, and includes a free dessert. Foster parents are needed in Snohomish County.
Free shredding: You can shred sensitive documents and recycle difficult items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Windermere North, 4211 Alderwood Mall Boulevard, Lynnwood.
Recyclable items include large appliances, car batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges, medical equipment, scrap metal, computer and other electronics. People can shred up to 20 banker boxes of material. Clothing, linens and shoes also are being collected to help people with vision loss.
