Monroe gets festive
Oktoberfest is coming to Monroe.
And with it a new diversion called Hammerschlagen.
Today, Saturday and Sunday, an Oktoberfest celebration is happening at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. Oktoberfest Monroe features authentic German food and beers served in steins, family activities such as the Root Beer Garden, free pumpkin decorating all weekend and fun games for all ages. It also will include Hammerschlagen, where a group of players attempt to hammer individual nails into the cross section of a stump one stroke at a time. The first player to level the nail with the stump wins.
The Hammerschlagen Tournament of Champions kicks off tonight with two qualifying rounds at 7 and 8. Saturday’s qualifiers are at 6 and 7 p.m. and the tournament championships take place Saturday at 8 p.m. The tournament is first come, first serve and people must sign up two hours prior to tournament times. There also is a special Hammerschlagen area for kids. For more information and to buy tickets, go to www.oktoberfestmonroe.com.
See WWII planes: The Flying Heritage Collection’s Free Fly Day, noon Saturday, features a rare Focke-Wulf Fw 190 and Il-2 Shturmovik flying from Paine Field. This will be the museum’s last fly day this summer for its vintage World War II fighters.
Watch them from outside the Flying Heritage Collection, at 3407 109th St. SW. Event is weather dependent. Does not include admission to the museum. For more information, go to www.flying heritage.com.
