Cold shelter open
The South Snohomish County Emergency Shelter is scheduled to be open through Wednesday. Meals are provided. The shuttle picks up people until 7 p.m. at Lynnwood City Hall, 19100 44th Ave. W. A second pickup location is the Lynnwood Trader Joe’s, Highway 99 and 196th Street SW. More info: 425-419-7938.
Check on fireworks rules: Fireworks are banned in most Snohomish County cities on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, in addition to unincorporated areas. Check your local rules to make sure. Fireworks are banned year-round in Edmonds, Everett, Gold Bar, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo and Woodway. Fireworks are not allowed on any school property, at any state or county parks or on land owned by the Department of Natural Resources or the U.S. Forest Service. Polar plunge and Camano beach cleanup: People can start their new year with a beach cleanup and a plunge into the cold water of Utsalady Bay. Anyone is invited to volunteer on the clean-up crew for Utsalady Beach on Jan. 1, then run into the water. The group will meet at the Forte: Music. Art. Dance. studio at noon and walk to the beach together. Forte is located at 1095 Essex St. A-1, and the business will provide hot cider and warm chili after the plunge.
