Volunteers sought
The state Department of Health seeks volunteers to serve on the 26 boards, commissions and advisory committees that oversee Washington’s health care providers. Although many positions are reserved for members of the professions the groups administer, nearly a fifth of the 280-plus spots are open to the public.
The professions range from head to toe — optometry to podiatry — and include occupations such as massage, occupational therapy, dental hygiene, medicine, psychology, nursing, midwifery, pharmacy and many more.
Members must attend meetings, some regular and others as needed, and they receive compensation for travel, meeting attendance and related expenses.

Big honor for paramedic: Snohomish County Fire District 1 Capt. Shaughn Maxwell has been named one of the top 10 innovators in emergency medical services for 2013 by the Journal of Emergency Medical Services.
Maxwell received the prestigious award in Washington, D.C., earlier this month. The award honors the top 10 EMS innovators from the United States and Canada who moved the profession forward during the previous year.
Maxwell was honored for his work developing a series of checklists for paramedics to use in the field to improve patient care and overall delivery of emergency medical services.
