State seeks king tides photos: Washington’s naturally occurring king tides start this week, and the state Department of Ecology invites the public to share their photos of these higher-than-usual winter tides.
In the Everett area, a 12.5-foot king tide is expected at 8:43 a.m. on Saturday. More high tides are expected in the Puget Sound region through Dec. 10, then again Dec. 30-31, and Jan. 4-8.
Take photos in public areas during a king tide, preferably where the high water levels can be gauged against familiar landmarks such as sea walls, jetties, bridge supports or buildings. Note the date, time and location of your photo, then upload your images on the Washington King Tide Photo Initiative Flickr Group.

Live holiday trees for salmon: The Adopt A Stream Foundation will again sell 200 “Live and Wild” Holiday Trees for Salmon. The trees cost $35 and will be available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Northwest Stream Center, located in Snohomish County’s McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.
Three- to 5-foot Sitka spruce, western red cedar, shore pine, Douglas fir, and grand fir trees are provided in pots. After the holidays, all trees that are returned to the Northwest Stream Center will be planted next to local streams, helping out next year’s salmon runs.
