Litter patrol
People driving in northwest Washington are urged to use extra caution over the next couple of months when they see youth crews cleaning state roadways.
Teens ages 14 to 17 will be working in Snohomish, King, Skagit, San Juan and Whatcom counties from this week through Aug. 20. They earn minimum wage.
Last year, these crews cleaned 6,372 miles of roadways, picked up 1.15 million pounds of litter and recycled 142,825 pounds of material.
But the top priority for the program is safety.
“Every driver needs to stay alert when passing a litter crew,” said Steven Williams, regional litter administrator and coordinator for the Ecology Youth Corps. “For most crew members, it’s their first job. We’re proud of their work to help keep our roadways litter-free.”
Darrington fundraiser: Darrington Historical Society plans to host a fundraising dinner and slideshow at 6 p.m. Friday at the Darrington Community Center, 570 Sauk Ave.
People are invited to enjoy a lasagna dinner, share their stories, hear the latest news about the Green Mountain Lookout and learn about historical society activities.
Cost is $8 or $15 for a couple. Children ages 5 to 12 get in for $5 and those younger eat for free.
