The annual hunt is on for gypsy moths.
Each summer, the state Department of Agriculture hangs thousands of small cardboard traps on trees and shrubs around the state to identify where gypsy moths are hanging out.
About 1,200 traps will be placed in Snohomish County and 600 in Island County. Most of the traps are placed near ports, waterways and areas of past gypsy moth activity.
About 2,000 more traps will be hung statewide this year because an Asian gypsy moth was caught in Idaho near the Washington border last summer. The Asian gypsy moth is a greater threat to the state than the European gypsy moth.
The number of moths caught each summer in Washington varies, ranging from 1,315 in 1983 to 17 in 2002. The number caught last summer was 68.
