Education reporters Eric Stevick and Melissa Slager are working on a series of stories about dropouts at local high schools.
They are exploring who drops out, why there’s pressure to keep more kids in school, and what schools and communities are doing to improve the dropout rate.
They would like to hear from you. Send your comments or questions to schoolfyi@ heraldnet.com, or go to www.heraldnet.com.
Most still love the big screen
In the age of video rentals, big-screen TVs and home theater systems, have Americans stopped going to the movies?
A December Gallup Poll released Tuesday said 65 percent of Americans reported seeing at least one movie in a theater within the previous year, which is consistent with the average percentage since Gallup started asking the question in 1988.
Thirty percent of Americans said they had not seen any movies in a theater in the previous year.
Corrections
* The executive director of Matthew House in Monroe is Linda Paz. Her name was misspelled in a story on Page B1 Saturday about the selection of Robert Hansen, 76, for a 2004 Volunteer Service Award at the nonprofit ministry.
* A federal judge on Monday rejected a soldier’s request for a preliminary injunction that would have removed him from active duty. The Associated Press incorrectly reported the judge’s action in an information box that appeared on Page A5 Tuesday. A suit filed by Spc. David Qualls and seven other soldiers challenging their active duty extensions under the Army’s “stop loss” policy remains before the court
