Local police officers will trade in their handcuffs and badges for serving aprons at Red Robin locations as part of their annual Tip-a-Cop program, which raises money for the Special Olympics.

During the daylong event, officers will collect tips from restaurant guests, and the proceeds will be given to Special Olympics Washington to support sports training programs and competitions.

The Everett event will be noon-7 p.m. today at the Everett Mall Red Robin, 1305 SE Everett Mall Way.

Get a whiff of smoke for safety

In conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, Snohomish County Fire District 7 offers an open house noon-4 p.m. Sunday at Station 71, 8010 180th St. SE in Clearview.

Families can visit the Safety Smoke Trailer to learn how to leave a building in case of fire. There will be fire-safety demonstrations, and children will learn about “stop, drop and roll” from a puppet performance.

Kids also are invited to climb aboard a firetruck.

Find out what’s making you sick

Dr. Stephen Bezruchka of the University of Washington will discuss “Is Your Society Making You Sick?” at noon Monday in the Snohomish Health District Auditorium, 3020 Rucker Ave, Everett.

Bezruchka is a senior lecturer in the international health program at the UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

Sheriff changes date of awards

A Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office awards ceremony planned for Tuesday has been rescheduled to Nov. 18 at Gold Creek Community Church, 4326 148th St. SE in Everett.

Boaters can pick up a deal

The second annual Big Boaters Swap Meet is 7 a.m.-5 p.m. today at the farmers market on the Everett waterfront next to Lombardi’s, 1620 W. Marine View Drive. It’s sponsored by the Everett Yacht Club and local businesses.
