Early absentee ballots pouring in

The Snohomish County Elections Department expects to receive by this morning more than 100,000 absentee ballots.

Elections manager Carolyn Diepenbrock said 94,750 had been received by Thursday, and more were coming in at a clip of 12,000 a day.

She said staff will be working this weekend to prepare for Tuesday’s general election.

Diepenbrock said 43.4 percent of the absentees had been returned, second only to Spokane County in the state. About 218,125 absentees were mailed out.

The department will start counting the early ballots at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Drinking and driving is scary

A special police patrol effort this weekend called Surround the Sound Halloween Festivities will be dedicated to victims of drunken drivers and former Washington State Patrol Trooper Mark Pederson.

The enforcement effort starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at Everett Police Department’s South Precinct, 1121 SE Everett Mall Way. Pederson will be at the kickoff event with his wrecked patrol car.

Get ready for snowy drives

Starting Monday, information about mountain pass driving will be available at several places. Clip and post the following mountain pass resource information sites and numbers for use all winter: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ traffic/passes; 800-695-ROAD; 206-368-4499; in some areas, you can call 511.

Corrections

* The home where Tom Beardsley and his children narrowly escaped a fire is located in Edmonds. A headline and photo caption on Page A1 Thursday gave an incorrect location.

* The Rock Church is located at 16891 146th St. SE in Monroe. That is where the public memorial service begins at 1 p.m. Saturday for Aaron Koester, a volunteer Monroe firefighter who was killed in an avalanche on Mount Rainier Sunday. The church’s address was incorrect in a story on Page A1 Wednesday.
