It’s Memorial Day and we salute those who have died serving their country. According to the Veteran’s Administration, here is a look at the number of U.S. military deaths in major wars:

About 800 in the U.S. military have died in the war in Iraq and more than 120 have died during operations in Afghanistan.
Volunteers honor heroes with flags
Bright and early this morning, members of the Boy Scouts of America, Everett Emblem Club No. 523, and Everett Elks Lodge No. 479 placed flags at Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, and Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, 1615 SE Evergreen Mall Way.
They will collect the flags this evening from graves of military heroes.
What is open or closed today
Memorial Day is today. Here are some closures:
Government: Federal, state and local offices are closed.
Schools: Closed, including colleges.
Post offices: Closed, although express mail service continues.
Commerce: Most businesses and banks are closed. Malls and many retail stores are open.
Transportation: Community Transit is on a Sunday schedule. Sound Transit is on a Sunday schedule. Everett Transit offers no service. The Anacortes-San Juan Islands, Mukilteo-Clinton, Seattle-Bainbridge and Point Defiance-Tahlequah ferries are on a holiday schedule. There will be no Seattle-Vashon passenger-only service.
