Red Cross sends help to Texas
Dave Alcort and Bill Thayer, both of Everett, and Steve Taylor of Gold Bar left Friday on American Red Cross disaster relief assignments to the Gulf Coast to help victims of Hurricane Dolly.
They will report to the Red Cross staging area at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio. Five other local Red Cross volunteers from the Snohomish County chapter left for Texas on Thursday, including Steven Place and Leslie Winkler, Everett; Roger Fox, Edmonds; Chuck Pierce, Arlington; and Bill Westlake, Mountlake Terrace.
Disaster relief assignments are normally three weeks.
Heart transplant fundraiser today
A fundraising event for Dale Jarman, who needs a heart transplant, is set for 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Eagles Club, 1112 E. Main St., Sultan.
The cost is $6 and includes a spaghetti dinner with salad, bread and dessert. People also can donate money to the Dale Jarman Heart Transplant Fund at local Key Bank branches.

Auction to save woman’s house
An auction is planned at 12:30 p.m. today at New Life Center Church, 6830 Highland Drive, Everett.
Cindy Windecker, 51, faces foreclosure. Friends are staging the sale to save her home.

Crews stripe Whidbey highways
State department crews will restripe Highways 525 and 20 starting Monday, and lasting through Thursday afternoon. Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Drivers are advised to use extra caution and watch for slow-moving vehicles that may be just around the corner or over a hill. Watch for the “wet paint” signs.

Book sale planned in Lake Stevens
The Friends of the Lake Stevens Library offers a book sale from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday on the boardwalk outside the library, 1804 Main St.
The sale coincides with Aquafest, the city’s main summer festival.
Books are $1 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paperbacks.
Proceeds will go to supplement services at the Lake Stevens Library, primarily providing funding for children’s events and programs.
