Members of Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge, a member of Sons of Norway International, is helping with Coupeville School District’s National History Day Competition program.

The lodge contributed reference, personal and financial support to the extra curricular program.

It must have helped. The district claimed 14 out of 19 places in a recent competition at Western Washington University in Bellingham.

Before they head to the state finals, see student projects at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Service Alternatives building, 206 N. Main St. in Coupeville. Students James Smith and Kyle King will offer "The Klondike Gold Rush," Megan Smith will show her video on "Why Do I Eat Lefsa For Christmas?" and Alexa Glover and Heather Fakkema offer a video on "The San de Fuca School."

The Snohomish County PUD offers a solar panel presentation at 10:30 a.m. May 22 in Everett.

Learn how to harness the power of the sun.

The workshop will cover the basics about solar heat, costs and how installations have worked, by instructors Chris Herman of Winter Sun Design and Andy Cochrane of Power Trip Energy.

A hands-on Kids’ Solar Camp for students in grades 3-5 is offered at the same time. Parents are welcome to register their kids for this camp, whether they are attending the seminar or not.

Cost is $35, $50 for a couple, and $5 for the kids’ camp. For more information, call 425-783-8275.

Whidbey Island Rescue for Equines offers its annual tack sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 1258 Silver Lake Road in Oak Harbor.

The group works with animal control and the community to rescue, rehabilitate and adopt out horses. At the sale, find new and used tack and other horse-related goods for sale.

Root for the Silvertips Friday and Saturday at the Vintage Cafe, 1508 Hewitt Ave. in Everett. Children are allowed, and you don’t have to be a member of the booster club.
