United Way of Snohomish County’s 2004 Volunteer Expo is
10 a.m.-6 p.m. today at Everett Mall.
This is "one-stop shopping" for potential volunteers to meet representatives from nonprofit agencies and ask questions about their programs. This is the place to visit if you are a student in search of a high school project, a retiree who wants to stay connected with your community, a family or group looking for an opportunity to serve together, or a person who just wants to do good work.
At the event, get your blood pressure taken, get a library card or register to vote. There will be entertainment, too.
More than 40 middle and high school teams are at the Everett Community College gym today for the 2004 Science Olympiad regional competition. Students will present their solutions to problems with science and engineering themes.
Projects with names such as "Wheeled Vehicle," "The Wright Stuff" and "Bottle Rocket" will compete against each other. Teams also will compete in chemistry, biology and physics labs.
Robots will take over the Parks Student Union building with the events "Robo Billiards" and "Robot Ramble." The parking lot will be the scene of "Storm the Castle."
Winners will go on to the state tournament April 10 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Winners there will compete in the national competition at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., May 21-22.
