North County Fire looks for volunteers

North County Fire and Emergency Management Services is accepting applications for volunteer and part-time firefighting positions.

North County firefighters and paramedics serve an area of more than 100 square miles of north Snoho­mish County.

They respond to emergencies such as fires, vehicle collisions, aircraft crashes, medical emergencies and water rescues, Battalion Chief Christian Davis said.

Applications may be picked up at the fire district’s office at 19727 Marine Drive in Stanwood or downloaded at www.­northcountyfireems.com.

Applications are due by Sept. 8.

Red Cross offers free CPR training

The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross plans CPR Saturday, a free training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th St. SW, Lynnwood.

Training sessions are scheduled to begin at 8, 9 and 10 a.m. The minimum age to participate is 11. Those who complete the three-hour course and pass the written exam will receive a Red Cross CPR certification card.

Quilt in Smokey Point for heroes

The Stanwood-­Camano Hero Quilters meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Aunt Mary’s Quilt Shop, 3325 169th Place NE, Suite D, in Smokey Point.

They make quilts for wounded soldiers through the American Hero Quilts project. The group has been meeting every month since January 2007 and has sent 248 quilts. They have at least 12 completed quilts that will be delivered later this month.

Correction

In a story on Page A2 Monday about the collapse of Wall Arch in Arches National Park in Utah, the Associated Press reported erroneously that nearby Landscape Arch collapsed in 1991. Only a portion of Landscape Arch fell, making the arch thinner, but it is still standing.
