Priority Mail packages and first-class Valentines and cards should reach soldiers overseas on time if mailed by Friday.

Here are some tips:

Use the service member’s full name, unit and Air/Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office address with the nine-digit ZIP Code.

For packages, place addresses on one side only.

Select a strong box and use good cushioning material.

If reusing a box, cover all previous labels and markings.

Separate batteries from items in the box that might accidentally turn on in transit.

Use two-inch wide clear or brown packaging tape.

Do not use cord, string or twine.

Include a card describing the contents and the sender’s and recipient’s addresses in case the box breaks open.

And here is a great tip —cushion items with newspaper so soldiers get news from home.

The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to assist in disaster response and other local emergencies as Disaster Action Team members.

Training will be provided in first aid and other disaster-oriented courses. For more information, call 425-252-4103, ext. 18.

The Snohomish Conservation District plans its annual open house 1-4p.m. Feb. 5 at 528 91st Ave. NE in Everett. At 2 p.m., awards will be given to cooperators of the year in small farm, dairy and commercial categories, wildlife farm of the year, conservation merit farms, district professional service and recognition of state award winners. Refreshments follow.

Conservation districts work with landowners on issues involving agriculture, forestry, wetlands, wildlife, fisheries, soil and water.
