A 60-year-old Gravenstein apple tree at Edmonds Community College will get a lift at 9 a.m. Saturday.
A crane will pick up the tree and move it to a new home at the children’s garden at the college’s Center for Families.
This is the tree’s second adventure in moving. In April 2001, it was rescued from downtown Edmonds to make way for a new office building.
Dick Van Hollebeke, an Edmonds Community College Foundation board member, sold the downtown property but arranged for the tree’s rescue with the new owners, Bob and Joan Gregg. They donated the $10,000 moving cost to the foundation as a contribution to its campaign to build a 15,000-square-foot child care and parent education center at the college.
The tree resided near a parking lot at the college during the fund-raising and construction. The Center for Families opened this fall, so the tree can finally put down roots in its intended home.
