A sister ship to the monstrous military cargo vessel that visited Everett in September pulled into Naval Station Everett on Friday. (See photo on Page B2.)
The USNS Soderman is the newest among the Watson-class cargo ships, and it’s one of the largest military cargo vessels in the world.
The Soderman’s sister ship, the USNS Sisler, visited Everett before it picked up vehicles and equipment from Fort Lewis bound for Iraq. Navy officials could not say when the Soderman would be leaving Everett or where it would be heading.
"We do not know what its mission is or how long it will be here," said Jeanie Kitchens, spokeswoman for Naval Station Everett.
The Soderman is one of eight ships of its class used by the Navy’s Military Sealift Command to deliver supplies needed for war or other emergencies. The ships are floating warehouses filled with food, water, ammunition and other materiel.
Congratulation to Arlie and Marie Phelps of Everett who are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary with a family party today.
They were married Oct. 29, 1938, in Mount Vernon.
They may need to rent some chairs for the gathering. The Phelpses have four children, 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
The Sultan High School marching band took first place in its division last weekend at the Puget Sound Festival of Bands at Everett’s Memorial Stadium. The Class A marching band also topped most of the bands in the Class AA division, except for Hanford High School, and beat all the bands in the Class AAA division as well. Divisions are determined by school size.
