Learn about farm survival Monday

Washington State University presents the “Farmer to Farmer” series.

The Monday event includes a visit to Carleton Farm, 830 Sunnyside Blvd. SE in Everett. Learn how a small family farm resists development pressures by returning to its roots.

Carleton Farm offers a store, 60 acres of vegetables and pasture and a horse boarding facility.

The event starts at 10 a.m. and costs $15. Early registration is required, and space is limited. For more information, call 425-338-2400 or e-mail klchristen@cahnrs.wsu.edu.

Jetty Island summer cleanup

Everett Parks &Recreation and People For Puget Sound invite the public to celebrate the end of summer by coming to a “Weed Away Work Party.” The cleanup is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 30 at Jetty Island.

Volunteers will remove invasive blackberry and Scotch broom to help restore Puget Sound’s native ecosystem and create healthy habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Jetty Island is located off Everett, with a ferry service that departs from the 10th Street Boat Launch and Marine Park, at 10th Street and W. Marine View Drive.

Whidbey Island position open

A vacancy on the Whidbey Island Public Hospital District Board of Commissioners is opening late this summer.

This opening is in Hospital District 1, which covers all of Whidbey south of Bush Point Road, but does not include the Bush Point voting precinct. The commissioners remaining on the board will name a replacement early this fall.

The board is seeking applicants who are experienced in business and who can commit to being available for selected committee meetings that may be held during the day, and to attend the regularly scheduled board meetings.

There is no specific requirement that hospital district commissioners pursue educational activities that will support their service as commissioners. However, each commissioner is encouraged to participate in suitable educational opportunities as they rise through the course of the year.

For more information, call 360-678-5151.

Applications will be accepted through September.
