Students at Gold Bar Elementary School will be up to their elbows in flour this morning.
It’s not a home economics class, it’s a basic course in community spirit.
The school kitchen will be taken over by the students, who will bake 100 pumpkin pies. The goodies will be delivered to the Sultan Food Bank for distribution to clients who might not otherwise get a fresh-baked Thanksgiving pie.
A recent fund-raiser at Cascadian Place retirement community in Everett co-sponsored by Senior Services of Snohomish County Meals on Wheels raised $5,535.
Sixty-four items were donated for the auction, including hotel stays, a sailboat cruise, a helicopter ride, a fitness club membership, theater tickets and meal certificates.
Auctioneer Jim Anders donated his services. Pianist Gary Hatle played background music. Lighting Store of Everett donated the use of a sound system. Appetizers and desserts were displayed in tires provided by Les Schwab, and coffee was donated by Tully’s.

Paul Martinis Sr., the head of the Everett fishing family profiled in Julie Muhlstein’s column Sunday, had six children with his wife, Pearl Marincovich Martinis.
Dr. Vincent Martinis Sr., who died in 1966, was not mentioned in the article. The others are Andrew, Winifred, Katy, John and the late Paul Jr.
