Governor warns: Be aware of bears
Gov. Chris Gregoire says it’s Bear Awareness Week.
The North Cascades Grizzly Bear Outreach Project offers some tips about living in Washington, with its 25,000 black bears and fewer than 30 grizzlies:
Keep garbage and food away from bears. Store trash cans inside a building.
Report any grizzly bears you see.
Put your garbage out on the morning of pick-up rather than the night before.
Remember that bird feeders attract bears. Consider feeding birds only in winter when bears are in hibernation.
Feed your pets inside, or during the day, and bring pet food indoors at night.
Clean barbecues frequently. Bears like barbecues.
