New car buyers will face another label
Starting in February, buyers can learn about how new vehicles sold in our state contribute to climate change.
The Washington Department of Ecology developed an easy-to-read label that shows new vehicles’ emissions of climate-changing greenhouse gases and smog-forming pollutants. The label must be displayed on each new passenger car, light-duty truck and medium-duty passenger vehicle sold in Washington.
Passenger vehicles, freight and construction vehicles, ships, airplanes and trains emit an estimated 47 percent of Washington’s greenhouse gases.
New vehicles should display the label starting after Feb. 15.
New frequencies for distress signals
The Coast Guard reminds boaters that starting Feb. 1, distress signals 121.5 and 243 MHz will no longer be monitored.
The decision to terminate those frequencies came after there were problems in the frequency bands that delayed search-and-rescue efforts, produced numerous false alerts and were unreliable.
Switch to the more reliable digital 406 MHz frequency.
Students collect items for soldiers
Everett Community College’s Student Activities Program Board is collecting donated items through February for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Donations can be dropped off at EvCC’s Student Activities Office, Parks Hall 209, at 2000 Tower St.
Visitors can also sign a card that will be sent to the troops with donated items.

For instance, students want donations of beef jerky, pudding, instant drink mixes, dry cereal, dried fruit, protein bars, trail mix, hard candy, chips, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cookies, crackers, sugar packets, condiments, nuts, peanut butter and jelly.
