Good Samaritan in Lynnwood
Jan. 15 was a long day for Lynnwood resident and good Samaritan Doug Clapper.
The diesel mechanics instructor from South Seattle Community College called security and waited for help after two women argued in the campus parking lot. It delayed his commute home by an hour, which turned out to be a good thing.
Clapper was the first person to spot an overturned car in a ditch on Maple Road shortly after 2 p.m. that day. He worked frantically with another man and several Lynnwood High School students to rescue their classmate Gatlena Lat, 20, who was trapped inside.
Clapper, 49, has two children who graduated from Lynnwood High School.
“It was scary,” he said. “I’m just so happy it worked out the way it did.”
Clapper said he would have been fine to remain anonymous but his name was provided to The Herald by a reader after a story about the accident in Saturday’s paper.
Clapper figures one good turn deserves another. “I would sure hope if it was me or one of my children, someone would do the same thing.”
